Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – after McLaren were valued at £3.5bn in a change of corporate structure in September.

Wolff, who holds a 33% stake of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake approximately five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team principal and CEO if the sale goes through.

Ownership Breakdown

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos, who both hold one-third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We will be making no official statement on the matter. The management structure of Mercedes F1 will remain unaltered, and each shareholder are dedicated to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Financial Increase

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in worth of the Mercedes team after Ineos bought its share for £208m in 2022.

This surge reflects the growth in valuations of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the growing popularity of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film featuring Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and has grossed more than $630m (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports film to date.

Present Performance

Mercedes are runner-up in the team standings, trailing McLaren Racing, with three races remaining this season.

Their lead driver George Russell has won two of the 21 races this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a record eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
