British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.
The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.
UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."
During December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
