A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.
The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
